Fixing Issues with the VRTY28 harness and 2024+ Toyota 79 Series LandCruiser

Tue, 1 Oct 2024

Unfortunately, our “plug and play” kits are not always as plug and play as we’d like! So, before throwing in the towel, we have some suggestions that will hopefully help you on solving the issue of cameras not working with our new VRTY28 adaptor harness.

When relying on factory wiring and integrating with OEM units, we sometimes find small quarks that are not always consistent.  One main issue that often arises is lack of amperage. Your Test-light might shine on 12V but what you don’t often notice is the small trickles of amps and the fluctuation caused but other accessories pulling on the same supply. The new 79 series LandCruiser is no exception to this. We often find that the load from the camera can sometimes be too much for what is provided out of the reverse trigger.

We recommend running the camera to full-time accessories 12Vdc. Certain cameras are better than others at handling full-time 12V power so we always push for DNA cameras to be used with the VRTY28. They can handle voltage fluctuations and are designed to run with constant power.

You will also need to run the reverse trigger straight through from the factory plug. The VRTY28 will see an upgrade in the future (once it is time to re-manufacture) that will have this included but if your harness is missing the following, you’ll need to manually connect it.

  1. The VRTY28 has a purple wire coming from the head-unit side – this will need connecting to the Red wire on the car-side of the factory plug (the one that plugs into the VRTY28). This is the vehicles reverse trigger and can activate the screen without the need of running cables to your reverse lights. Please see the image below to identify the Red wire, as mentioned.
  2. If you are connecting this Red wire to the Purple wire from the VRTY28, DO NOT run the power cable from the reverse camera to the same wire or to the reverse lights. This allows you to run the camera power wire to accessory power and run the Earth wire directly to ground. Make sure it is a 12V accessory circuit and not a constant 12V to avoid discharging the battery.

3. Please also note that OEM Factory vehicle screens' always love NTSC more than they love PAL signal. For the best result with the factory 79 Series screen, make sure the camera is wired to NTSC.

Hopefully, once this is complete, your reverse camera will consistantly work and you shouldn't see any more issues with failed reverse cameras.
